English Teacher

We welcome those who can be close to each child to improve their English proficiency. There are full-time appointments. Inexperienced foreigners are active! It is a comfortable workplace where you can work well with each child. Regardless of gender, age, or length of service, we entrust work to motivated people. The support system makes it easy for new hires and staff raising children to work. You can work in a way that is compatible with private life and family. Education policies will be shared on OJT. Job includes general English teaching (for kindergarten/elementary school students), liberal arts classes/Eiken preparation to teach liberal arts (natural science, etc.) in English, and seasonal events (spring/summer school, Halloween, Christmas, etc.).

English Teacher

We are currently looking for one native English speaker to work as an English teacher, either full time (40 - 42.5 hours per week) or semi-full time (up to 29.5 hours per week). The listed salary is for full time workers. The salary for semi-full time workers depends on the number of hours of work per week. This number is agreed upon by CHEERS and the employee. CHEERS has been in Sendai since 2001. We started as a small English school and expanded to working with the Miyagi board of Education, doing teacher training seminars. In 2009, we published our first high school English textbook, which was approved by the Japanese Ministry of Education. Since then, we have published 19 other English textbooks, all approved by the ministry, which are being used in hundreds of high schools around Japan. CHEERS has always been committed to education and pedagogy. We are very proud of the work we have done so far and are looking for people who can complement our goal of providing high quality English education. We want someone who is friendly, energetic, and creative, who can teach kids and adult lessons, and who takes their job seriously. Moreover, we are looking for people who are interested in Japan, its culture, and its people. We would prefer to hire someone who learned Japanese in college or took Japanese lessons for an extended amount of time. Having said that, it's not a must. Although we have a full curriculum for adults and a lot of material for kids, we encourage teachers to make original lessons. By contributing to the curriculum, teachers will feel more included and will improve their lesson-making ability. We will provide full training and help the teacher to integrate quickly and effectively in our system. The students at CHEERS range from 3 years old to people in their 80s. Many of the students are doctors, pharmacists, nurses, dentists, university professors, researchers, and business people. Of course, there are also many kindergarten - college students, homemakers, retired people, etc. The students who come to CHEERS are very nice and friendly. Many of them need English in their jobs. Thus, the students are motivated and want to learn English. CHEERS can sponsor visas and help teachers through the process. CHEERS was started and is run by an American teacher from Los Angeles. There is no Japanese middle management. Since the owner is also a teacher, we can communicate more easily and understand each other better regarding what is best for the students, etc. We offer the social insurance, pension, and unemployment benefits. Employees are also entitled to vacation time (the standard government plan). The job is an average of 40 hours per week / an average of 8 hours per day. This includes teaching hours and lesson planning / office hours. Teachers will have two days off per week, but we cannot guarantee that those days will be back to back. Saturdays and Sundays are especially busy, so these days will most likely be work days. Some days may be split shifts (working in the morning, taking a break, then coming back for evening lessons). We do our best to limit such days. We believe in the right of employees to disconnect, so we do not contact teachers on their days off or after work, unless it's something urgent, like a change in the schedule for the next day. CHEERS has an at-home atmosphere. It is located on Jozenji Street, which is one of the most beautiful streets in Sendai. The street is covered with Zelkova trees and in the winter, we have the Sendai illumination festival right outside our windows. The school is about seven minutes on foot from subway stations. The ability to use tablets and laptops well is very important. We use devices during lessons, as well as to write up student files, share lesson material, etc. The teacher is expected to use his or her own tablet or laptop while teaching.
